The Arts

At St George’s our students have the opportunity at every stage of school to make music, take part in drama performances and explore the visual arts.

Our corridors reflect our commitment to a vibrant arts programme, and our community comes together every week to watch children of every age present dramatic assemblies, share pieces they have devised independently and perform music individually and collectively.  

We take the arts seriously because we know how vital the skills gained are not just in school but in life. Children discover a safe and supportive environment in which to experiment, collaborate, create and build their confidence.

Music

Music is a universal language that brings people together, ignites creativity and nurtures self-expression. From Early Years to the end of Key Stage 3, all students participate in group music lessons, where they explore a wide range of musical traditions and develop their skills in rhythm, melody and performance. Students will have the opportunity to play the violin, the ukelele and to learn syncopation and teamwork through drumming and step techniques.  

For those looking to deepen their musical journey, we offer optional one-to-one instrumental lessons with professional music teachers during the school day. Through participation in choirs, ensembles, and performances, students not only refine their musical abilities but also build discipline, teamwork, and perseverance, all while experiencing the joy of making music.

Drama and Performing Arts

From Early Years through to Key Stage 5, St George’s students engage in theatre and performance, learning to collaborate, think critically and communicate with confidence.

Performance opportunities are woven throughout the school experience, from stage productions and parent assemblies in Primary, to Year 8’s participation in the Shakespeare Schools Festival, and even international drama festivals for older students. Drama is more than just performance. It’s a space where students can take risks, explore their identities and grow both academically and personally.

Arts, Craft and Design

From Early Years to Key Stage 5, our Visual Arts programme encourages students to experiment, express themselves, and refine their artistic skills. Through a diverse curriculum covering drawing, painting, sculpture, digital art, and more, students develop their ability to communicate ideas and emotions visually.

Engaging in visual arts not only strengthens problem-solving skills, fine motor coordination, and spatial awareness but also fosters an appreciation for cultural heritage and contemporary issues. Through hands-on projects and exhibitions, students gain confidence in their creative abilities and learn to see the world from a fresh perspective.

Yesterday we went on an excursion and saw lots of animals. It was lots of fun.  At school I like playing on the pirate ship and the slide. We also have a football pitch. I like it when we go the library and we can choose our own books. My favourite book is Piggy and Gerald. Sometimes the librarians read to us. I also like it when we have music and art.

One of the things I like the most about St George’s is that there are so many different nationalities and I can make friends and meet people from all over the world. I really love sculpting in art. We recently had the chance to sculpt clay into food, so I made this waffle.

I’ve been at St George’s for seven years. There’s a nice friendly community of people and I find the teachers very supportive and helpful. I’ve enjoyed being a part of the school.
